OVERCAST, DAMNATION, TERROR

they are all playing in Worcester tonight and I am not going, the level of guilt I feel is outweighed by the comfort of sitting on my square ass in my room…

I’ve become the old dude I used to hate.

  1. i have been thinking about starting a support group for washed up hardcore dudes. we can sit around and talk about when shows were fun and our knees and backs didnt hurt after moshing.

dude, there’s no shame in exiting the game. it’s a young man’s sport, and we’re no longer viable players.
with each successive year that goes by, the “scene” morphs further and further away from the “scene” that you stepped into almost 20 years ago. there’s a thousand new bands, most playing a painfully honed niche of hardcore/metal whatever. there’s booking agents (remember when gorilla biscuits made fun of their agent…), guarantees, glossy magazines, advertising budgets, 64 track recording studios, and on and on.
i’m not saying it’s any better or worse than in 1981, but it’s just different, and it ain’t mine, and probably ain’t yours anymore. once you stop playing a role in shaping the “scene”, no matter on what level, then you can make a graceful exit and check in from the sidelines every once-in-awhile to root on your favorite teams.
it happens, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
i still listen to some of the same music that got me into punk, and i try to keep up with new music that interests me within the fringes of punk. and i get the same enjoyment. i rarely go to shows, but i don’t feel like i’m missing too much. i hate to say i’ve “seen it all before”, because i haven’t, but maybe i’ve just seen enough for now.

and as for that show you were lamenting…buck up man, you saw overcast and damnation when they were real-live functioning bands. leave the nostalgia trip for those who didn’t have a chance the first time around.

    old dudes unite and recline!

  3. Damnation at the 108 reunion in DC was awesome. If they come through again see them.

and i dont think i am old enough to claim “old dude” status yet, but Gray summed it up pretty well. good post.
