Wasted On The Young

Hey, I was just thinking that maybe you don’t need to waste
Some of the best days of your lives, trying so hard to abide
By some preset list of rules
Talking about conviction
When you haven’t even been convinced of anything yet
Just stressing about letting down all your friends
It’s like having your mom pick out your clothes for you
You’re still too young to know where you stand on anything yet
And there is nothing wrong with that
It might be kinda fun to get to know yourself a little while
Take a left at every fork, stare into every cloud
On the journey to find what’s in your heart the only thing to be united
with is that pulsing in your veins
But seriously, fuck all that for a while
What’s the point of being a kid
If you are not gonna run wild and break every stupid rule
Even the ones that make those bands seem cool
You might as well hang out at church

Mark my words
There’s still so much that you have yet to learn

Your strongest beliefs the ones that will see you through
Will come to you when least expected
They can’t be forced, will not be shaped to fit
Truth does not come when called
And if you’re only young once and these days, they move fast
Why would you waste one second of them
Falling in line, following rules
It sounds so simple but I know it’s fucking hard

It’s gonna take a little while to find out exactly who you are
But then maybe the day won’t come
When you have to turn your back
One all those things that you once stood for
Left behind like some old pile of shirts
I’ve seen it happen so many times before
Spit in the face of a sacred oath
That some of us took when ready

  1. You crouched in the corner
    Rolling dice before the show
With a smile and a hug
“I’ve been counting down the days”
The hours fly right by so we stay up all night
    Talking movies, talking life
    Remembering where we came from
All that’s changed but you’ve remained
    And that’s enough for me

the song that Jawk posted lyrics to, sort of confused me…
it seems to say that sxe isn’t for everyone, and that it’s advantagous to “live a little” before deciding that you want to be sxe. i agree with that.
but then it gets to the end and it talks about a “sacred oath”, and that’s where you lose me. that kind of rhetoric just cheapens what you’re doing, and makes ammunition for those who want to take shots at you.
so i’m not sure about that song.

    the second song posted though…
holy crap! i couldn’t agree with phil-phay-phock more. it’s a fucking love letter to your closeted boyfriend. is that really a song? like, for reals?

  3. “but then it gets to the end and it talks about a “sacred oath”, and that’s where you lose me. that kind of rhetoric just cheapens what you’re doing, and makes ammunition for those who want to take shots at you. ”

    Not really…
    it’s just saying
straight edge isn’t for everyone which is fine…
but don’t cheapen what it is by being one of the many fly by night followers…

and as ‘gay” as it sounds that song is directly about me and people who read and post on here…
so I am very fond of that song, the man who wrote it, and those who it is about…

that’s some of the gayest shit i’ve ever read. but i bet they rock some hot ass 13 year olds with it. badaboom.

i’m sorry, but that sounded like every other typical 13-year-old internet dumbass. you know, i have respect for what you guys did in the past, but the two of you seem to really be stooping below a level of intelligence that i assumed you had.

sorry if this shit is “gay”. i guess i can just cry about it to my closeted boyfriend.

    back to jawkers:
the whole “sacred oath” ideal is strange to me, because it starts to sound like sxe is a religion, instead of simply being a lifestyle choice. and, maybe more importantly, isn’t sxe a personal decision, and not a group mentality? by that i mean, what do you want out of sxe? do you want something for yourself, or are you joining a group of people commited to some cultural change…or is it both? that’s for you to answer, but personally it was always about me as an individual, and certainly i got some reinforcements from my peer group, but ultimately it was a way to seperate myself from the squares (which in retrospect seems incongruant…or maybe not…)and remove myself from the jocks and preps (was i living the “outsiders” book?).
anyway, by attributing this sort of “do or die”, “sacred oath” rhetoric to a personal choice i feel like it’s a little overboard. like really, is it a matter of life and death? if you bum your friends out by drinking beer, is that something that’s going to ruin your life, or is that more a barometer of who your real friends are? sxe is an important part to a lot of people’s life, and i fully respect that, but it shouldn’t define your life. no one thing should define your life. a rounded person (insert fat joke here) is multi-dimensional and has all these different facets to their personality, and that’s what makes them interesting. sxe, punk rock, veganism, catholicism, soccer, painting, or fixing your car are all things that contribute to your life being well rounded, and you need all those things in order to balance eachother out.

so you see, sxe is one part of a balanced life (much like toast is one part of a balanced breakfast) and so by making it a “sacred oath” you are in essence placing more importance on the concept than need be.

    long answer.

now to tony, as for my intellect being called into question for critiqueing the lyrics for whatever that other song was…
i’m not a smart man, and i’ve written some of the world’s worst song lyrics, i’ve penned some fairly ridiculous fanzine articles in my day, but i feel fairly qualified to point out that those song lyrics are not good. they might be about you and jawk, or whatever, but they still read like middle school poetry. and to the outsider, it the lyrics do look like a note you might have passed to the girl you had a crush on in 7th grade. sorry, but that’s my opinion, and apparantly phil’s as well.
again, i’m no english major, but i’ve heard some great song lyrics before, and these fall cripplingly short of the bar.

  6. Just to clear up a few things…
I honestly could care less if you are straight edge or not, but it does bum me out when people for whom straight edge was such a part of there life, like getting X’s tattooed on them, turn to drunkards. To borrow a line from Earth Crisis –
“Fuck Those Who Cheapen What I Truly Am In Others Eyes”
Alot of my friends are no longer edge, and that’s cool with me. The friends whom I actually shared a bond with and who touched my life I will always love no matter what they choose to eat or drink, but to those that claimed the game and where more than likely loud mouthed and in your face about, and now are loud mouthed and in your face drinkers/smokers…I have no love, and the arguement could be made that I never had any for them anyways…
I would really like to bring this topic to a close…
we are all friends here and we all know what’s up…

  7. ok, i am sorry. i kinda jump the gun when defending bane because they are one of my favorite bands. the song is not about me, but i still don’t see it as being middle school poetry but whatever. the replies just sound kind of juvenile when you throw around terms like “gay”, etc. – that’s all i was trying to say. i didn’t mean for this to turn into some kind of debate…

so…how about those gas prices, huh?

  8. Hey guys. TwoFour here again. The people in England are really really ugly.Last night we played a bar where the stage was inside a cage.

  9. >>>and as ‘gay” as it sounds that song is directly about me and people who read and post on here…>>>

I know I’m jumping into some sort of a debate here, but you also have to realize that a very large portion of your readers and posters are here because you post a lot of new about vinyl and macs. Not because of any sort of political or lifestyle stance.

I bookmarked your site because you post on Kid Robot about Dunnies, not because I was sXe in another life. Nor because I listened to Strife or Earth Crises 10 years ago.
