Less Than Zero / Farrakhan x Scientology

Picked up this gem today. I’ve always been fascinated by this soundtrack since I get it on tape back in like 1989, a few years after it’s 1987 release. Owing mostly to how cool Rick Rubin was in the the late 80’s, this record has some insane songs on it, especially for a blockbuster Hollywood movie (based on the awesome Brett Easton Ellis novel)

Life Fades Away, written by Glenn Danzig for Roy Orbison-

from Wikipedia:

“Danzig also contributed to the film’s soundtrack with “You and Me (Less than Zero)”.[2] Danzig had originally been asked to write the song for a female vocalist, but when Rubin could not find a suitable singer Danzig recorded the vocals himself.[26] The song is credited to “Glenn Danzig and the Power and Fury Orchestra”, which featured the same membership as the initial lineup of Danzig, with the exception of Eerie Von. Since Von did not like the way producer Rubin wanted the bass played on the song, George Drakoulias played the bass instead.”

Slayer doing Iron Butterfly’s In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida:

Public Enemy (featuring the questionable line “Farrakhan’s a prophet and I think you ought to listen to“***)

LL Cool J!:

***Farrakhan’s insane God based nationalism and Anti-Semitism has gotten even crazier as of late-

From Wikipedia:

“On May 8, 2010, Farrakhan publicly announced his embrace of Dianetics and has actively encouraged Nation of Islam members to undergo auditing from the Church of Scientology.[35] Although he has stressed that he is not a Scientologist, but only a believer in Dianetics and the theories related to it, the Church honored Farrakhan previously during its 2006 Ebony Awakening awards ceremony (which he did not attend).[35][36]

Since the announcement in 2010, the Nation of Islam has been hosting its own dianetics courses and its own graduation ceremonies. At the third such ceremony, which was held on Saviours Day 2013, it was announced that nearly 8500 members of the organisation had undergone dianetics auditing. The Organisation announced it had graduated 1055 auditors and had delivered 82424 hours of auditing. The graduation ceremony was certified by the Church of Scientology, and the Nation of Islam members received official certification. The ceremony was attended by Shane Woodruff, vice-president of the Church of Scientology’s Celebrity Centre International. He stated that “The unfolding story of the Nation of Islam and Dianetics is bold, It is determined and it is absolutely committed to restoring freedom and wiping hell from the face of this planet.” [37]

Read more over at the Southern Poverty Law Center:

“Although both the Nation of Islam and Scientology embrace extraterrestrial theories as well as self-improvement programs aimed at lifting members to higher and higher levels, they nevertheless make for extremely surprising partners. NOI is a racist hate group that holds that white people are intrinsically, biologically evil — “blue-eyed devils,” in the group’s parlance. Scientology’s followers, who include several well-known celebrities and other wealthy people, are overwhelmingly white (although membership is open to all) and its founder reportedly was a racist who long defended South African apartheid.

Always apocalyptic in his outlook, NOI’s Farrakhan has recently ramped up his warnings that the end is near, identifying recent natural disasters, the uprisings of the “Arab Spring,” and America’s actions against authoritarian Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, a long-time NOI ally, as evidence. In a March press conference, he predicted that the world as we know it would soon be destroyed.”

A google search reveals some more interesting reads, careful though several of them are from conservative conspiracy theorists with their own insane agenda/take.
